Jesse James vs. Von Dutch
May 7, 2006 - latimes.com
The article "Jesse James Wants to Take You From
Dork to Cool in 20 Minutes" (by Elizabeth Khuri, Men's Fashion
Issue, April 9) quotes James referring to Von Dutch and other clothing
companies: "They're all copying everything right from us and
making bank off it. And they don't make motorcycles, they don't
build cars, they don't know how to weld and fabricate and have
this whole lifestyle and shop." Each of these statements is
false.
Von Dutch has existed since 1996, and from what I
understand, James has only been creating his budget-priced apparel
for about three years. Our company's namesake, Von Dutch (aka Kenny
Howard), was the godfather of "Kustom Kulture," a movement
based on the custom-ization of motorcycles and cars.

Biker glam - Eye-popping custom choppers
come in art-museum-like decor
Alex Mardikian, master builder and
chief operating officer for Rancho Cucamonga-based Von Dutch Kustom
Cycles, has built bikes for celebrities. He recently sold a Louis
Vuitton-clad bike to singer Mary J. Blige for $130,000. On the
other end of the price scale, Mardikian sold a $36,000 bike to
a customer looking for the Ferrari of motorcycles, without the
Ferrari price.
"He gets more stops, looks and
whistles than he would, in all honesty, in the Ferrari," said
Mardikian who likened his custom bikes -- which can feature hand-carved
leather and messages painted inside the oil cap -- to a box of
Cracker Jacks with a hidden prize inside.
"If you're going to spend $36,000,
you could have bought two Hondas." A custom bike is special,
he said. The
old guard motorcycle companies -- Harley-Davidson, Honda, Suzuki
and Kawasaki -- have also taken note of the custom trend.
